Kilts & kilted skirts

There is no size to choose. Every kilt and kilted skirt is cut to your own measurements, so all you need is a tape measure and a couple of minutes.

  • 2required

  • 2optional
    fell & hip
  • inmeasure in
    inches

Measure on your body, not on a garment. We add the room the kilt needs.
  1. 1

    Waist Required

Measure around your body at navel level, about 2 inches above your hip bone and higher than where your jeans sit. Keep the tape tight.

A kilt sits higher than trousers. Measuring too low is the most common mistake.

  2. 2

    Fell Optional

The distance from your waist line (1) down to your hip line (3), roughly halfway to your seat.

Leave it blank if you're unsure; it isn't needed for most orders.

  3. 3

    Hip / seat Optional

Stand with your feet together and measure around the widest part of your hips and seat. Empty your pockets first.

Worth adding if your hips are much fuller than your waist.

  4. 4

    Kilt length Required

Kneel upright on the floor. Put the end of the tape on the floor and measure straight up to your belly button.

This puts the hem on the middle of your knee, the traditional length. Kilts shouldn't be worn too long.

Want it shorter or longer?

Start from your kneeling measurement (step 4), then adjust:

Where the hem landsLength to choose
Above the kneeKneeling measurement minus 2–3 in
Middle of the knee (traditional)Your kneeling measurement
Just below the kneeKneeling measurement plus 2 in

No one to help you measure?

Measure a skirt or kilt you already own that fits well. Lay it flat and fasten it:

  • Waist: measure straight across the top of the waistband and double it.
  • Hip: measure straight across 7–8 inches below the waistband and double it.
  • Length: measure from the top of the waistband down to the hem.

Does my waist number look right?

A quick sense check against usual US sizes. Always order with your tape measurement, not this chart.

Good to know

  • Between two numbers? Choose the larger one. The kilt fastens with buckled straps, so it adjusts by about an inch.
  • Measure over thin clothing with empty pockets, standing tall and relaxed. A helper makes it easier, especially for the length.
  • Outfits and accessories (shirts, hose, shoes, hats) use the standard sizes shown in their own menus.
  • Not sure? Email your measurements to support@kiltnyc.com and we'll check them before we cut.

Girls

Girls' pieces are sized by age. Ages are a guide: go by height and chest first. Between sizes? Size up so there is room to grow, or choose Made to measure.
